Organize a direct elimination petanque tournament

The direct elimination tournament is a very simple format: whenever a team loses a match, it is immediately eliminated. The winner is the last team remaining.

📌 What is a direct elimination tournament?

In a direct elimination tournament, teams compete in a knockout bracket. If necessary, qualification rounds are played before the final stages. In each round, losing teams are eliminated while winners advance to the next stage until the final.

  • A single defeat eliminates the team
  • The winning team advances to the next round
  • Random draw for each round
  • A single winner at the end of the tournament
Example: Tournament with 32 teams → Round of → Quarter-finals → Semi-finals → Final

🔄 Number of teams and qualification rounds

The number of teams automatically determines the bracket structure. Ideally, the number should be a power of two (8, 16, 32, 64, 128, etc.). Otherwise, qualification rounds are required to reduce the field to a balanced bracket. Some teams may receive a bye during this stage, meaning they automatically advance to the next round.

  • If the number of teams is a power of two: no qualification round is required.
  • Otherwise, a qualification round is required before the final stages.
Example: 20 teams → a qualification round is required to reach 16 teams → then the final stages begin.

⚙️ Steps to host a direct elimination tournament

1. Creation of the tournament

Create your tournament by entering the main information: name, date, location, tournament type, format (head-to-head, doubles, or triples), direct-elimination format, and number of available courts.

Team registration

Add all participants. Teams remain unchanged throughout the tournament.

3. Generate team badges

Generate team badges. Each team receives a unique number which makes it easier to identify teams on the pitch. The team keeps its badge for the duration of the tournament.

4. Match draw

Matchups are generated automatically :

  • Qualification round if necessary
  • Then the knockout stages (Round of 128, Round of 64, Round of 32, Round of 16, etc.)

Winning teams are automatically placed into the next stage of the bracket.

5. Enter scores

After each match, enter the score. Winning teams automatically advance to the next round, while losing teams are eliminated.

6. Knockout stages

Rounds continue until the final. The number of rounds depends on the number of teams entered in the tournament :

  • Round of 64
  • Round of 32
  • Round of 16
  • Round of 16
  • Quarter-finals
  • Semi-finals
  • Final
Each round of the bracket eliminates half of the remaining teams.
7. Final result

The winner is the team that wins the final.

8. Close the tournament

Once the final is over, you can close the tournament and archive the results. Results remain accessible at any time from the organizer’s profile or the tournaments page.

📱 Follow live results on your smartphone

Players can follow the progress of the bracket in real time via a link or QR code. Results can be viewed directly on smartphones, tablets, or computers.
